We are a team of high school students who were inspired to create change after seeing a blind person struggle to navigate their surroundings. This experience motivated us to combine our skills in technology and design to create a smart white cane with AI abilities, aiming to make the world more accessible.
At BlindAid, our vision is to create a world where technology empowers individuals with visual impairments to live independently, confidently, and without barriers. We believe that innovation should not only solve problems but also open doors to new possibilities. By developing accessible, intuitive solutions like the Smart Cane, we aim to redefine the way people experience mobility and foster a future where independence is within everyone’s reach. Through continuous innovation and a commitment to inclusivity, we strive to make the world a more connected and accessible place for all.
1. Obstacle Detection with Ultrasonic Sensor:
The cane is equipped with an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor that detects obstacles in the user’s path. The sensor measures the distance to nearby objects by emitting ultrasonic waves and calculating the time taken for the echo to return.
2. Feedback Mechanism Controlled by Arduino R3:
An Arduino R3 microcontroller processes the data from the ultrasonic sensor. When an obstacle is detected within a predefined range, the Arduino activates a vibration motor. The intensity of the vibration increases as the obstacle gets closer, providing real-time feedback to the user.
3. Advanced Image Recognition with Raspberry Pi and OpenCV:
To enhance functionality, the cane features a Raspberry Pi that integrates the OpenCV library for image recognition. This allows the cane to identify and classify objects in the environment, such as signs, stairs, or doorways. The Raspberry Pi processes visual data from a connected camera and translates it into meaningful cues for the user. In future iterations, this feature could evolve to include voice prompts or auditory feedback for more detailed guidance.
